Barry Kurtz—chair of the Franchise and Distribution Practice Group at Lewitt, Hackman, Shapiro, Marshall & Harlan and a Certified Specialist in Franchise & Distribution Law as designated by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization—has been appointed to the State Bar’s Franchise and Distribution Law Advisory Commission.

Mr. Kurtz’s appointment starts on Sept. 14, 2014, immediately following the 2014 State Bar Annual Meeting.

“I am honored to be chosen for this prestigious position by the State Bar and am looking forward to serving the legal community in this role,” Mr. Kurtz said.

Mr. Kurtz, who has 32 years’ experience in franchise law, has been a member of the American Bar Association Section on Business Law and Forum on Franchising since 1982 and was a member of the International Franchise Association’s Legal/Legislative Committee from 1991 to 1998. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of Woodbury University.

Mr. Kurtz is rated AV Preeminent by Martindale Hubbell, the highest rating awarded by peers in the bar based on legal ability and ethical standards, and he has been named a Super Lawyer by the Journal of Law & Politics. He serves as an expert witness and also represents brewers and distributors in the beer distribution industry.

At Lewitt Hackman, Mr. Kurtz represents franchisors, manufacturers, franchisees and distributors and also has a wealth of experience in related business matters. The practice group is currently one of the largest law departments dedicated to franchise and distribution law practice area in California.

Mr. Kurtz earned his bachelor’s degree at UCLA and graduated from Southwestern Law School.
